Bad Release

An approved mission release starts failing the systems that received it.

Mission functions that have already taken the release fail, and the ones that have not are next.

DEMONSTRATION SCENARIO

This is a demonstration scenario. It is not a live demonstration and does not report an executed result.

The situation

A mission-system release was approved and is propagating. Functions that have not received it still work.

Failures begin on the mission systems that have the release.

Why this is hard

Those failures can be a latent fault in an approved release, an intrusion, or a capacity collapse. Matching the failing set to receipt is the distinction.

Calling it an intrusion, or throttling capacity, should not count if receipt is what the failures follow.

What the operator can see

What changes, without naming the hidden cause
  1. NormalRelease approved
  2. VisibleMission functions fail
  3. At riskThe next receiver

What V8Y must determine

V8Y must distinguish a latent fault in an approved release from an intrusion and from a capacity collapse, and say what must stop reaching further mission functions.

What may happen next

Further mission functions fail as the release reaches them.

What counts as recovery

Not recovery

Success is not a rollback recorded in a tool.

Recovery

Success is that the dependent mission function works again.

Observed results

No executed results are published for this thread.

What this evaluation would test

  • The same release challenge as Unsafe Release, in a mission-system setting.
  • Not presented as a separate historical incident.
  • Who has the release, and who is next.
  • Rollback alone rejected.

These are the conditions the evaluation would test. They are not reported results.

Operational basis

View operational basis and sources

The demonstration adapts the documented release failure behind Unsafe Release to a mission-system setting. It is not presented as a separate Air Force incident.

CrowdStrike. Same Channel File 291 account as Unsafe Release. 2024.

Unsafe Release is the enterprise form of this challenge.
